New Tenkara Line Spools from DRAGONtail

I received some prototype line spools from Brent at DRAGONtail Tenkara the other day. He stated that these would be ready for sale soon on their website.

Based upon the now unobtainable, but very popular Raji-Leica Oni spool, the new Nirvana on the Fly spools are foam with plastic rims. One side has indentations to capture the end of your line, while the other side is smooth and has a built in bar to hold your fly. The spools are 70 mm in diameter.

The center hole is large enough to stay on your finger as you wind on the line, but small enough to fit on most tenkara rods.

I received two different thickness of spools, but Brent stated that there will possibly be three different thickness available. The thin spools are 7 mm thick, while the thick spools are 11 mm thick.  For comparison, Raji-Leica Oni spools are 13 mm thick and Meiho spools are also 13 mm thick.

The thin Nirvana spool is perfect for level line aficionados, while the thick spool will please furled line fans.

Clockwise from top left: Nirvana thick spool, Nirvana thin, Meiho-56, Raji-Leica Oni.

The new Nirvana on the Fly spools appear to be well made and will likely be durable enough to last a long time. Look for them soon at DRAGONtail Tenkara or anywhere their products are sold!

  1. Those look really interesting, I just revived the new Oni spools that are very thin, not as thin as the line cards but close.

  2. I was lucky enough to get to try these spools out as well. I think they not only fill the void left by Raji Laica, but improve upon them as well when it comes to thickness and a smooth side for winding your line easier.
