Ikari - Line storage spool, Fly box, and Line winder, all in one!

I recently received a special package in the mail From Roman Rusinov of Sap and Bark. This package contained two Ikari tenkara line spools. Boy, are these things amazing!

My spools were customized with the "TETON TENKARA" inscription.

Ikari spools are perfect for the person who wants one all inclusive tenkara line management and fly storage product. Whether you are a tenkara hiker, tenkara biker, or just want a compact, do it all product to compliment your favorite tenkara rod, Ikari spools are the answer.

Ikari spools come in three types: Large, Mini, and "Spool". Although they each have slightly different designs, each is capable of holding two different tenkara lines, and multiple flies. The Large can even carry spools of tippet!

I was sent a Mini and a Large Ikari, and I was very impressed with both. The Ikari are not only beautiful, but are also carefully engineered for maximum ergonomics. They will not only carry everything you need for an impromptu fishing adventure, but the Large could be all you need for fishing if having a minimal kit is your goal!

Each spool has magnetic lids closures that make them super easy to use. They are strong enough to be very secure, but not so strong as to be annoying when removing the lids. They also have magnetic fly holders so you don't need to worry about dropping your flies or having them blow away in the wind!  These magnets are functionally fantastic, but if you have an artificial cardiac pacemaker (usually implanted in your upper left chest wall), don't place one of these spools in your shirt's left chest pocket - you might trigger your pacemaker to go into its safe mode (the magnets have to be right on top of, or touching the pacemaker to do this). Just put the Ikari in your trouser or shorts pocket and you'll be just fine - then fish on!

Another really nice feature of both the Mini and Large Ikari is the integrated line winder. This winder attaches to your rod with two mini zip ties (included), and can hold your line as you move from place to place. When you're done for the day, you can wind the line back onto the spool, then clip the spool into the line winder, which holds the spool in place. Neat huh! So clever!

Here is a video from Sap and Bark showing some of the spool designs and features. Note, the spools I received have many of the features and designs shown in the video, but also seem to have some updated features, particularly with the line winder.

So if you are looking for something minimalistic to carry your lines, flies and even tippet (large spool feature), then check out Ikari line spools! I bet you'll be just as impressed as I am!

Disclaimer: My opinion regarding these spools are just that, my opinion. Your opinion may differ.  Buy one and see for yourself. I received the spools unsolicited from Sap and Bark for a product review. There was no expectation for a positive review.

  1. Very ingenious design for sure! Just a little too complicated for me. I don't like attaching things to my rod like that and I'd be worried about losing the lid. I would rather see an attached, swing-out lid. Do they sell replacement lids? Also, I prefer a spool with a hole in the center for easier transport. Other than that, I think it's beautiful and I'm sure many tenkara anglers will like it.

    1. Hey Jason! Roman from Ikari here. There is a simple way to attach the lid with a piece of line or a thread (via dedicated pierced hole). You can also just open it half way (swing out) so it’s stays attached. Or you can simply open it and put the lid to the back (there is a set of magnets there that will hold it in). If someone looses one I will send a replacement, no problem. There is a new model (S) that has a traditional large hole in the center as well. Hope that addresses few concerns you got. I appreciate the feedback!

  3. Really a beautiful product... Easy to see a ton of work went into the design and engineering of this spool. Love it when people take a need and elevate the solution into an artform.
