I'm not good at catching large trout. In fact, I'm terrible at it. I freely admit this fact and lay it, bare truth and all, at your feet. I suppose it comes from the fact that I don't pursue large trout. I don't fish the type of waters that hold them and I don't seek them out. I'm just not a big fish guy.
I live fairly close to some famous large trout waters (South Fork of the Snake, Henry's Fork, Silver Creek, Ft. Hall Bottoms, etc.) but I generally don't go out of my way to for fish them. Here's a point of illustration, I live close to Brent Auger (DRAGONtail Tenkara, NIRVANA ON THE FLY, Leland Fly Fishing) and could fish the same waters he does, but I don't (we all know what size of hogs Brent catches). Why? Intimidation? Maybe. No interest? Mostly. I just like smaller trout in smaller waters.
But every once in a while I'll fish for larger trout. Late winter, early spring is the season that I generally seek them out. Why? Because the waters I really like to fish are still frozen over and I can't get to them. April 5th was one of those trips to see if I could catch some larger fish. I did catch a few. The largest was a rainbow a little over 21 inches (53 cm). I didn't have any trouble hooking them, I had trouble keeping them from breaking off. I'm out of practice and lack "big fish" skills.
Anyway, here's the video. Don't be too disgusted with me, I'm no Brent Auger!
Those were some really nice fish Tom! What size tippet do you use for these bigger guys?
ReplyDeleteHi Bill. I started with 5.5X fluorocarbon, as these trout are very tippet shy. After breaking off a few times I changed to 4.5X fluorocarbon. That seemed better.
DeleteOoh, nice water and fish for the Shimano BG Tenkara 48NV.
ReplyDeleteYou're too humble. ;-)
