Tacky Fly Box

A while ago I sponsored a new fly box design on Kickstarter. Recently, I received the completed fly box. It's the Tacky Fly Box from Tacky Fishing.

Looking over the box, it really doesn't look that different from many other fly boxes that I have. What is different, however, is that instead of ripple foam, or slotted foam, this fly box has a silicone rubber insert with slots. It is in those slots that the hook of the fly in inserted.

The box measures 7″ x 3.5″ x 0.75″ (17.8 x 8.9 x 1.9 cm), with slots for 168 flies. The lid has small round magnets that hold the lid closed very effectively. The case, lid and bottom, are polycarbonate and appear to be pretty well made.

My box came with a couple stickers and a "free" custom Buff. Rewards for sponsoring, I guess.

The box fits in my Zimmerbuilt Chest Pack along side of my more preferred C&F Design fly box. I have loaded the Tacky fly box with some dries, while my C&F is subsurface only. I don't fish with dries very often but now I can take a few with me when I think that the conditions are right.

I'm not sure that the Tacky fly box is really that revolutionary, but the silicone rubber holds promise of being very durable and securing holding hooks of any size.  I guess I'll see how it holds up over time.

  1. I got mine and kept looking and looking, but I couldn't see any slits in the silicon. I was beginning to think there weren't any. Then I took my glasses off and started squinting. Now I know I'm getting old. They sure are tight; but that's good.

  2. I too received a Tacky Fly box from their Kickstarter. I haven't loaded it up yet, but will soon.
I think if it was maybe 1/2 or 3/4 as tall, it would be a perfect tenkara-sized box for me.
I'm sure different iterations will come, so looking forward to that.
If it can handle the 100 degree Florida heat, it looks like a winner.
