Video log -- March 23, 2015

I got out for a a couple hours the other day. I fished a stream that runs through a farmers field; yes, I had permission. The water was clouding up, due to the early snow melt. It was quick, but I did take a few browns.

  1. Hi Tom,
Thanks for the video. I just got back from fishing some small streams in the mountains of northeast Tennessee. I used my Pro Spec 2 Way 360 exclusively. What a blast! My wonderful wife gave me a wooden American Tenkara net from Sam at Nets That Honor Fish as a Christmas present.(Just like the Pro Spec, I found out about the net after reading your blog) It worked very well and is a piece of fishing art/craftsmanship. My fishing buddy took his first trout on his Iwana on the trip. He is not as "hooked" on tenkara as I am, but I bet it won't take long.

  2. I'm a big fan of your videos on the stream, especially with the after affects to show the drift and take locations. Thanks for putting in the effort.

    1. Thanks, Jay. I know that POV fishing videos are not that entertaining, but I do try to make mine somewhat informative -- at least I hope they are.

  3. All of your videos are well done and very informative, and have been an inspiration for me to get into Tenkara. I had my opportunity to get on the water for the first time with my Tenkara rod this weekend and caught a few browns on a small creek like the one you are fishing here. It was a huge learning experience, but I think I my 4', 5x leader was too long for such a shallow creek while nymphing off 10' of level line. On smaller streams like the one in the video, do you use a shorter leader, say 2'? I see your takes are pretty quick, so I'm assuming a shorter leader allows you to more closely watch for any disturbances to the level line for the hookup.

    Regards,
    Eric

    1. Hi Eric, in this video my tippet was only 2 feet long. I personally rarely fish a tippet longer than 3 feet. Since I fish upstream I find I have better control with short tippet length. Of course, you must take into account the type and depth of water you are fishing.

    2. Hi Tom, thanks for getting back to me in such short order. This makes complete sense, I too was, and prefer to fish upstream, as I will be fishing mostly headwaters or freestone pocket water in the Mtns. W. of Denver. Next time I will try a 9’ level line and 2-3’ tippet. Thanks for the tip!
