I love seeing new and innovative accessories for tenkara. When I first started tenkara in 2012, there were new accessories coming out monthly from various folks and vendors. But things have slowed over the past few years, and I sort of miss it!
However, I recently received some tenkara accessories from a company in Pennsylvania. The company is called Minimalist Gear Co. and they have a variety of tenkara accessories that are pretty cool.
One accessory is called the The Holder. This simple device is designed to hold your rod tip plug and keep it from inadvertently slipping away. It comes in a variety of sizes and colors. You can attach it to your jacket zipper via a slip ring and it will keep your tip plug safe and sound. It also has an optional lanyard if that is more your style.
Another accessory is The Sling. This simple accessory attaches to your rod tube and turns it into a rod sling. It's comprised of two plastic rings and a length of paracord. The paracord has two slip knots so that the length can be adjusted. It's simple but very effective. I found that the rings were pretty tight and somewhat difficult to get onto my Tenkara USA Ebisu (original) rod tube, but maybe I was doing something wrong.
There is also The Keeper. This accessory (not to be confused with The Keeper by Tenkara USA) is an all-in-one fly box that will hold some flies and basic tools. One side has a ripple foam fly patch that will hold more than enough flies for your tenkara adventures. On the other side is a magnetic grid that can hold metal tools such as forceps, nippers, etc. There is also an optional magnetic mount that is designed to fit 22 mm line spools, so you can carry lines in The Keeper as well! The Keeper is made from special wood polylactic acid (PLA) that is 100% biodegradable. It feels like wood, smells like wood but performs like plastics in wet environments. Since it has magnets, don't put it in your left shirt chest pocket if you have a cardiac pacemaker. If you do, if might put your pacer into fail-safe mode.
All of the accessories from Minimalist Gear CO. are made in the USA, and have an unlimited lifetime warranty, no receipt required. Here is what they say, "Experience the outdoors with confidence. All of our products are warranted for life so you never have to worry about the gear you get from us. We will replace your Minimalist Gear Co. product in the event it becomes damaged or defective - at no charge to you.You see, it doesn't matter how it happened, whose fault it was, or where you purchased it. If you ever have a problem, no matter the cause, we promise to take care of you."
I also received a couple of furled lines from Minimalist Gear Co., but I'll do a separate post on these in the future.
As I stated above, I love seeing new and innovative accessories for tenkara. If you are a minimalist angler or a tenkara enthusiast, then check out Minimalist Gear Co. They are easy to communicate with and very helpful. I think their products are excellent and should stand up to a lot of hard use. I also suspect this company will be introducing other accessories in the future; they love tenkara!
