Tenkara Video Log -- September 18, 2015

Here is part of a recent outing that I did. I decided to do a 3rd person view video, since I haven't done one in a while. The creek is a moderate-high gradient high mountain freestone with native, wild cutthroat trout. I start out with the Nissin Zerosum 360 7:3 but I switch over to the Air Stage Fujiryu 360 5:5 since it's a better fit for this kind of stream. My line is a 10 foot #3.5 with 24 inches of 6X tippet. The flies are various wool-bodied kebari (as seen in previous posts).  The trout start out small but get larger as I progress upstream.

The action could have been faster but I think it wasn't due to a cold water temperature of 42° F.  We had snow the day before and this brought the water temps down.

  1. Thanks for another enjoyable video. What a beautiful stream. The Fujiryu is #1 on my Christmas list. What was it about the stream that made you feel the Fujiryu (at 5:5) was better suited then the Zerosum (7:3)? I haven't seen much written about the Fujiryu other than what is on TenkaraBum's website.

    1. The Fujiryu is a little softer rod which fit the fish size better. Also it cast better with a #3.5 line and unweighted fly. It is a 360 cm rod but in reality it is 373 cm fully extended. It has just a little more reach. I'll be writing a full review soon; I've just been lazy!

  2. I have been looking at the Fujiryu to replace my 12' Iwanna. I just purchased a royal stage 7:3 400 and a Daiwa Kiyose 43M. Do you think the Fujiryu would help round out my quiver?

    1. Maybe. It depends on what you are looking for. The Fujiryu comes in both 5:5 and 6:4 stiffness's. A 360 cm 5:5 Fujiryu would be more soft than the Iwana, while a 6:4 360 cm Fujiryu would be similar very similar to the Iwana. So it depends on what you want. Do you like stiffer rods (by your other rod choices I'd say yes), or do you want to break with what you've got and go for a much more dynamic, full flex rod. Either way, you really can't go wrong with the Fujiryu IMO.
